The Deep Blues Show features two hours of classic and traditional Blues music, including Delta, acoustic, pre-war (1920’s-40’s), boogie woogie, jump, Carolina, Texas, harp, Chicago electric, Mississippi hill country Blues and so much more. Featuring the best in Blues, from the pioneers of the 1920’s – the Blues revival of the 1960’s – to the latest solo and duo musicians. Airing twice weekly on WEVL Memphis 89.9 FM.

The first hour features up-tempo Blues music, including the powerful and amplified sounds of Blues combo’s from Chicago’s Chess Records, boogie woogie piano players from St. Louis, the Blues harp of Sonny Boy Williamson and Charlie Musselwhite, plus the classic sides from Memphis’ own Sun Records.

2451893038_4efc8af6a4_oIn the second hour of the program the sounds shift to the solo artists and acoustic duos from the Delta, Texas and the Piedmont such as Mississippi Fred McDowell, John Lee Hooker and Lightnin’ Hopkins, plus the great pre-war Blues from the originators of the musical form, including Blind Willie McTell, Bo Carter and more.

The call letters say it all: “WE VoLunteer.“ With only three paid staff positions, WEVL reflects the collective effort of numerous volunteers, both on and off the air, for 37 years.

WEVL currently broadcasts daily starting at 6 AM. With nearly 60 different programs airing each week, FM 89.9 offers a wide variety of music and information presented by programmers who independently prepare their own shows and who know their areas of interest well. Blues, rock, Memphis music, world music, bluegrass and country are just some of the many musical genres we cover.

WEVL is a non-profit, educational §501(c)(3) organization whose funding comes primarily from its listeners, who attend WEVL concerts and benefits and become members with donations of $40 or more. The majority of WEVL’s operating revenue is raised during biannual pledge drives. Broadcasting approximately 50 miles and covering the Greater Memphis area, WEVL is heard in portions of Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas, and worldwide via the Internet. Building on 37 years of growth, countless volunteer hours of effort, and millions of dollars in listener donations, WEVL continues to work toward greater goals.
